Back on the hook

A long time ago, in the early 2000s, there was a bunch of creatives around the globe who launched a handmade revolution. Out of this blast of creative energy, blogs blew up like fireworks, bursting the boundaries of craft and shining cool stuff, connection and community into my tiny world. A whole miniature world of mothering small children and the excruciating-to-watch existential crises that came along with it.

In the wake of the Australian icon of this make-and-blog-apalooza, Pip Lincolne, encouraged by friends like Auntie Cookie and inspired by craft artists like kootoyoo, I started  Mrs Smith.  This was a classic mummy blog, workshopping who I was in that safe online space, while showcasing my crap crafting attempts. (Although I have to say I was on the money with the tea towel trend. If only I had had the stamina and skill to follow through on that.)

These blog women were online friends, most I  never met face-to-face. They supported and shared their worlds with me through our grown-up challenges, successes and in facing the consequences of the life choices we had made.

With children, careers and faster, slicker, visual social media all growing, the blogosphere blazed, then for many of us, dwindled.   As our worlds opened up, writing time diminished and it was left to insta to vaguely keep in touch.

They say that it takes 7 years for the body to replace itself,  to recreate and replace every cell. We are at least twice the women we were.  A powerhouse of people that made hard choices, braved life's bullshit and are surviving and thriving as best we can.  Women who made lovely things including messy, brave and beautiful lives.

And now we are all back in a tiny world. Separate but together. It seems to be a moment for that gorgeous community to re-connect.

The wonderful kootoyoo now kooandyoo, has put a call out to get the band back together and I am ready to play.

Welcome to Mrs Smith 2.0.
